About this catalogue

This rare square-format catalogue was published on the occasion of Jo Niemeyer's exhibition at the renowned Galerie von Bartha in Basel in 1980. It reproduces fourteen full-colour works alongside a biography, offering a concise survey of the artist's rigorously systematic approach to concrete art.

Born in 1946 in Alf, Germany, Jo Niemeyer is a leading figure of concrete and constructive art whose compositions are derived from mathematical order and, above all, the proportions of the Golden Section. Trained first as a photographer and industrial designer, he turned to geometric painting in 1966 and developed a body of work in which nature, measurement and perception are brought into precise dialogue. His ambitious land-art project "20 steps around the world" extended these principles across the globe itself. Niemeyer's work is held in numerous international collections, including the Museum of Modern Art in New York and the Pinakothek der Moderne in Munich. This catalogue documents an early chapter of his long association with Galerie von Bartha.
